'Tell Them I’m Not Home' is a lightly fictionalized memoir of growing up in the Olney section of North Philadelphia in the decade following World War II, a place not unlike Jean Shepherd’s Hammond, Indiana of a decade earlier. The close-quarters life in a blue-collar neighborhood of row-house streets provided the author with a cast of characters, many funny, some scary, as well as a near-endless litany of stories. 'Tell Them I’m Not Home' is a ticket back to the Olney & Philadelphia of the late 1940s and early 1950s, a place as singular, colorful and as lost to today as Hapsburg Vienna or tenement New York.

Pete Byrne is a retired corporate and advertising copywriter living in New Jersey. He’s a parent, grandparent, music enthusiast, a sometime painter and a snowboarder, not necessarily in that order.

What inspired you to write your first book?

Well into my sixties, I found myself trying to answer the question posed by David Byrne (no relation) "...How did I get here?" The gulf between my coming-of-age in the decade between 1945 and 1955 and the early Twenty-First Century seemed unbridgeable in any way other than a book.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

That a reader will take away some authentic feeling or insight into a recent but already unknowable past, a singular, specific past in an urban, blue-collar, Roman Catholic world in the years following World War Two. I don't have a nostalgic bone in my head, and the book is, I believe, absent any of the "Happy Days," "good old days" nonsense that seems to pervade so much of 1950's memory. Then as now, coming of age, despite the material differences, remains pretty much a process of "working on mysteries without any clues."

Is there any special method to your writing?

Initially structure proved the most difficult barrier to getting the book written. It was only when I set the chronological boundaries of 1945 and 1955 that I was able to harness and winnow out the material. I used chronology, the boundaries of the neighborhood and specific subject matter; my family, people in the neighborhood and mostly myself and my memories of how I felt about what was taking place. I used cars, clothes, streets, corners, etc., to organize the flow of the narrative. Each chapter is almost a stand-alone piece, but if the book is read sequentially it does form a coherent whole.

How many hours a day do you spend reading /writing.

Constantly. Like most people who write, I'm a printed word obsessive. I read, often to the detriment of more pressing matters. I've written for a living. I've journaled compulsively for over forty years and the journals serve as a place to try things out. I've also been blogging at "The Compost Heap" for the past several years.

What books have most influenced your life?

Wow! From Harvey Kurtzman's EC Comic Books of the early 1950s to the academic canon; Joyce, the Russians, Eliot. Then there's everything Graham Greene and Evelyn Waugh have written. Russell Banks, John Banville and Richard Russo are on my lists, as are W. G. Sebald and John Gardner. I was a History major and I gravitated toward the more literate historians, both academic and popular; John Lukacs, Max Hastings, Fritz Stern, Antony Beevor and on and on and on. At this writing, I'm two-thirds through Jonathan Lethem's "The Ecstasy of Influence," and I hope that Lethem's terrific writing, like the writing of every author I've ever read and liked, will in some conscious or unconscious way influence my own writing.

If you could be the author of any novel, which would it be and why?

Evelyn Waugh's Second World War trilogy, "Sword of Honor." Even his active service in something as overwhelming as a world war couldn't tarnish his powers of observation or his withering wit. The series also communicates, sadly and gently, his awareness that the war will destroy everything he holds dear in English life.

What are your current projects?

There's a half-finished novel, about 60,000 words to date, on a working life in the belly of a major American corporation. Again referencing Waugh, It' s general tone so far is one of benign if grotesque comedy. There is also a stack of unpublished short pieces that I hope to develop into a short story collection.

An Interview with Kergan Edwards-Stout

What inspired you to write your first book?

Over 12 years ago, out of the blue, a line popped into my head: “James Baldwin once wrote that Americans lack a sense of doom, yet here I stand.” At the time, I didn’t know where that line came from, who was speaking it, or what it would become, but that line stuck with me, eventually becoming the first line of the novel. I’d read Giovanni’s Room many years ago, and that concept, that Americans lack a sense of doom, really resonated. Except, for me, having lost a partner and many others to AIDS, I feel as if I’ve known doom all too well.

Is there any special method to your writing?

I try to serve the story, in whatever way I think fits best. I’ve written light, funny things, as well as darker, moodier work. Songs for the New Depression walks a balance between comedy and tragedy, which is very challenging.

How many hours a day do you spend reading/writing?

Wow—Great question! It took me over 12 years to write this first book, which happened in fits and starts. I have two kids, as well as a full-time job, and it is really hard—at the end of a long day—to fit everything in. But I finally decided that if I was to finish the book, I’d have to sacrifice in order to do it. So I started getting up each morning at 5AM to go to the gym, which then gave me more time later in the morning for writing, and I also started saying “no” to my kids—which is very hard to do—but I made it clear to them that when Daddy is working, he needs to focus.

A typical day is 1-2 hours, but if I have extra time, I put it towards writing.

What inspires you to continue being a writer?

I was reminded again, when Steve Jobs died, of how fragile life is. He had a great quote about how our time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. And that is just it: find your passion and do it. Otherwise, you’re just wasting hours, instead of finding life invigorating.

If you could have been the author of any novel, which title would it be and why?

I am a huge fan of Armistead Maupin, who wrote the Tales of the City series, all of which are just brilliant. I love his ability to quickly draw you in, sketch out the characters, and involve you emotionally. With each of the books in that series, despite the lapse of time from first book to the last, he was able to really capture each of those specific eras, and bring them and the people who lived then fully to life on the page. I try to do the same with my writing. His series remains instrumental in my life, and every few years, I pick them all up and read them again.

Do you think you will ever change audiences?

So much of what I see and write is framed by my life experiences, and as I’m a gay man, that is a key element of most of what I write. However, after my next book, a memoir, I’m looking at writing a novel based on a screenplay I penned, which is very much for children. It mixes elements of Harry Potter and the movie A Christmas Story, and takes its readers on a fantastical journey. Definitely a different audience!

What advice would you give anyone who wants to become a published author?

Do your homework and learn everything you can. While I first tried going the traditional route, sending the manuscript to agents and publishers, I finally decided to do it myself. My book is literary fiction, and as there is a glut on the market, publishers aren’t interested. Not knowing any better, I almost went the Lulu route, as many of my friends had done, which—for me and my ultimate goals—would have been a mistake. Instead, I formed my own micro-publishing company and am releasing the book through that. Having it come through a company gives it more cache than the other route, and by cutting out the middleman, the royalties are much better. For anyone considering this option, check out Aaron Shepard’s book “POD for Profit.”

And do you have a list of favorite books/authors?

I have very eclectic tastes. I love Michael Cunningham’s work, particularly The Hours. Robin Lippincott’s Our Arcadia I found really wonderful. Writer Louis Bayard has moved into genre stuff, which doesn’t always appeal to me, but his first novel is a really fun romp called Fool’s Errand. And I love nothing better than curling up next to the fire with a Maeve Binchy novel. In fact, much of today’s literary fiction I find over-written and hard to connect with. Sometimes, when it comes to a good read, storytelling and simplicity beats technique, hands-down.

Brian Turner takes a turn as guest editor, and an emerging poet wins a big prize. You could say we're even more excited that usual about Guernica's poetry section.

As I read through the poems gathered for this issue, I found the pulse of the city insisting that it be heard—even in poems which leaned more toward a pastoral tradition. In the Paris of Pascale Petit’s “My Father’s City”—“The gargoyles’ cheeks flush / from the strain of breathing for you.” In “Smoke,” Michael Symmons Roberts asks, “What new edifice / hardens within, waits for the world to sharpen.” Dunya Mikhail takes us to “Hong Kong,” where the flowers are “everywhere: / on porcelain, / on bracelets, / on ashtrays, / on silken cravats, / on hems of coats, / on carpets, / on walls, / in meals, / in paintings, / in speeches...” Billy Ramsell’s “Distant Fears” recognizes that “The tide’s placid, insistent tongue is only wave / after wave of finance washing up on this green haven.” And, finally, Matthew Sweeney’s poem (“The Sleepwalker”) offers an intricate puzzle of consciousness and intent which begins with this opening gem of Carver-esque minimalism: “The sleepwalker shot himself / on the bridge over the freeway.”

Deeti’s shrine was hidden in a cliff, in a far corner of Mauritius, where the island’s eastern and southern shorelines collide to form the wind-whipped dome of the Morne Brabant. The site was a geological anomaly—a cave within a spur of limestone, hollowed out by wind and water—and there was nothing like it anywhere else on the mountain. Later Deeti would insist that it wasn’t chance but destiny that led her to it—for the very existence of the place was unimaginable until you had actually stepped inside it. The Colver farm was across the bay, and towards the end of Deeti’s life, when her knees were stiff with arthritis, the climb up to the shrine was too much for her to undertake on her own: she wasn’t able to make the trip unless she was carried up in her special pus-pus—a contraption that was part palki and part sedan chair. This meant that visits to the shrine had to be full-scale expeditions, requiring the attendance of a good number of the Colver menfolk, especially the younger and sturdier ones.

September 30, 2011 (Ann Arbor, MI)--Dzanc Books is pleased to announce our newest writing workshops. The Dzanc Sessions are designed for writers who are ready to amplify, polish, and advance their writing. An eclectic platform of craft-based workshops are offered in a series of online sessions throughout the year, with specializations in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and screenwriting. The Dzanc Sessions are an extended form of Dzanc's current one-on-one mentoring program which, in the last year alone, has enabled Dzanc students to have their works published in dozens of leading journals, including PANK, The North American Review, The Citron Review, and many others. Dzanc instructors including Meg Pokrass, Amy Minton, Janet Freeman, Yelizaveta P. Renfro, Robert Lopez, Gail Konop Baker, and others have taught workshops both independently and through universities and have published many widely praised books, as well as seen their work included in Best of the Web, the Wigleaf Top 50, and Best American Essays.

The initial sessions will debut in October: a slate of six workshops are led by award-winning literary artists who are committed to engaging deeply with your work. In these classes, both beginning and experienced writers will find opportunities to strengthen their writing, to approach it from new angles, and to grow as confident and skilled creators. In each workshop, writers will receive detailed feedback on multiple drafts of their writing.

The sessions will begin the week of October 16. Each class spans eight or ten weeks. The content of the class is the same regardless of the time span; it is merely accelerated in the eight-week version. Eight-week Session One classes run through the week of December 4. Ten-week classes run through the week of December 18.

The price for workshops is $325 and can be paid through PayPal. The cost also includes a three-month membership to the Dzanc Books eBook Club. (Or, if you do not have an e-reader, you can select a free copy of any print title from Dzanc Books.) The bulk of registration fees support the non-profit work of Dzanc Books. A portion of it supports the work of the instructors and the administration of the Dzanc Sessions.

The Seton Hall Arts Council will bring three published poets and authors to read as part of the annual program, Poetry-in-the-Round.

The Arts Council invites a variety of authors and poets, to come and read a piece of their work at Seton Hall. The reading is followed by a question and answer session with the author, who will then occasionally sign books before they leave.

Gary Shteyngart, a New York Times bestselling author of "The Russian Debutante's Handbook," "Absurdistan" and most recently, "Super Sad True Love Story," will read exceprts from his works on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Walsh Gallery. His books are critically acclaimed and international bestsellers and he also currently teaches writing at Colombia University, as well as Princeton. Shteyngart's reading is the last in the fall semester, but there are more to catch before that.

This fall season began on Wednesday night with Timothy Donnelly, a poet and current poetry editor of the Boston Review, as well as a professor in the writing program at Columbia University. Donnelly, who read for students gathered in Walsh Gallery, is the author of "Twenty-seven Props for a Production of Eine Lebenszeit" and "The Cloud Corporation."

Perhaps the biggest draw this season is Joyce Carol Oates. She has been writing for many years, publishing everything from novels and short stories, to drama and poetry, to essays, critical reviews and stories for both young and old. Her work has won countless awards over the years, including the National Book Award for her book "Them," as well as being nominated for the Pulitzer Prize three times. Oates also teaches graduate students at Princeton in their English department. She was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Obama in 2010. Oates's reading will be held Oct. 4 in the Jubilee Auditorium.
